How Our Salon Reduces Waste: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Eco Beauty in Toronto

Reducing waste is apart of our everyday at Queen's Shop. From using just the right amount of hair colour to reusing empty containers to sending your hair clippings off to help clean up oil spills or to create bio plastics!

It's apart of our mission to be conscious of these actions everyday. It's starts with our actions in the salon, though it is continued and supported by the businesses that we partner with to operate the salon.

Our key brand partners are BCorp brands that have consistently proven they're set on improving their impact on our planet. We exclusively use Davines for our hair colouring and hair care. And we use Green Circle Salons to help us divert up to 97% of our waste from landfills.

Since opening in early 2015, sustainability has been a key pillar of Queen's Shop - Fine Hairdressing Salon. Our goal has always been to offer an earth conscious experience from the beginning. It's importance lives at the core of everything we do. And is a passion of the salons founder.

Here are a few other ways we practice sustainability everyday:

• we use a compost bin for our food scraps

• we only create 1 bag of garbage a month

• we divert up to 97% of our salon waste by separating our recyclables

• we use our packaging waste if we can (book marks, decor, planters, etc.)

• we use biodegradable cleaning products

• we use washable mugs & cups for the water, tea & coffee that we serve

• we use energy efficient appliances and LED lights to conserve energy

• we encourage our team to bring their lunches and to use transit, walk or cycle

• we try to only use what colour + products we need, to not waste any

• we turn off the lights we aren't using and unplug our blowdriers when we are away

• we offer a refill option and bottle return

• we offer plant based products with high natural origin, low toxicity and biodegradable ingredients

Really, there are so many small details that we do everyday!

Although nearly 50% of small businesses have adopted waste reduction practices in recent years, we believe there's still much more to accomplish. Providing our clients with a space and home hair care products that offer peace of mind is a step forward. We also hope to inspire you to make changes in your daily lives.
